My personal blog around GNU/Linux

Hello WordPress, this is Prasanna, pursuing my Engineering in the discipline of COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, III year in a college affiliated to Anna University.

I have a little experience with linux. And through this blog i would like to share u my experiences with linux here. Am using two distribution of linux, one in my laptop using ORACLE VIRTUAL BOX – LINUX : DEBIAN BASED MINT; and another in my desktop that is a pure DEBIAN.

DEBIAN is the complete OS i would say as it includes nearly 25000 Packages within it. There are two types of installations for DEBIAN one is using NETINST, and another is FULL PACKAGE.

Difference between the two is that NETINST installs only the basic or core of the OS and requires network(Internet) connection for installing Several features including the DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT (GUI). But when using FULL INSTALLATION all the packages and features are included within the ISO image. Complete debian ISO image is of five parts each and the size of them includes a total of around 20 GB. This size seems to be big since it includes all the packages of DEBIAN.

DEBIAN’s packages are of the format PACKAGE_NAME . DEB.

After Installing Debian if you need to install any package just type the following command:

” apt-get install package_name ” and press enter

Note: This requires network connection so that the package will be surfed over the internet in debian’s server and file will be retrieved and installed automatically.

Example if you want to install FIREFOX web-browser: type the following command and try it:

” apt-get install firefox ”Β  and press ENTER.

Basic commands which i worked out:

1. To change the directory:

” cd directoryname ” press enter

2. To view the contents of the directory:

” ls ” press enter.

3. To view the contents as well as the permissions of the file or directories:

” ls -l dirname (or) filename.extension ” press enter.

4. To Grant all rights to all users (a shortcut):

” chmod 777 filename (or) dirname ” press enter.

5. To sign in as a SuperUser from TERMINAL:

” su ” press enter. It prompts for a password and so enter the root password when u set during the installation. SIGNING INΒ  as a superuser will grant all the rights to you.
